How Grizzle, the Troll, Made a Friend

Written by Michelle Edwards

There once was a Troll named Grizzle.  Grizzle lived up in the mountains where no one was near because he was big, scary looking and smelled really bad.  One day he went into his kitchen pantry and realized he was out of his favorite candy, Sour Patch Kids.  This made him sad and a little nervous because now he had to go down into the city to stock up on his favorite candy.  He did not like going down to the city because the people down there were scared of him.  When he went down there they would all scream and then run and hide from him.  It made it easy to get the Sour Patch Kids, but what he really wanted most in the whole wide world was a friend.

So this time before he went down to the city he decided he was going to pray.  “Dear Jesus, please bring me a friend and please don’t let them scream and run away this time. Amen.”

He started his way down the mountain when he heard a noise.  He froze in his place and looked around to see where it was coming from.  What was that sound?  Was it a giggle?

“Is someone there?” He asked with a shaky voice.

“Who are you?” A voice from behind him asked

Grizzle jumped and turned around to see a little blonde haired boy smiling up at him.

“You’re not afraid of me?” He asked.

“Nope, you just smell really bad, what is that smell?” asked the little boy.

“It’s the smell of garbage and rotten eggs, my favorite smell.” Grizzle told him. “It doesn’t smell good?”

“Not at all. Where are you going?”

“I’m going into the city because I ran out of Sour Patch Kids.” answered Grizzle

“You like Sour Patch Kids!” the little boy exclaimed, “Those are my favorite too!”

“They are the best. I eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

“Wow! You are lucky, my mom would never let me eat that many.” said the little boy

“What’s your name?” asked Grizzle

“My name is Charlie, what’s yours?”

“I’m Grizzle, thank you for not screaming and running away from me.” He said shyly

“You’re welcome, you know what would help you,” said Charlie.

“What’s that?”

“A Shower!” Charlie told him as he pinched his nose together so he didn’t have to smell Grizzle.

“A Shower?”asked Grizzle

“Yep, follow me.” Charlie said as he grabbed his hand and off they went down the mountain and into the city.

When they got down to the city Charlie led Grizzle to the car wash and told him to hop in.  “Don’t worry it won’t hurt a bit!” Charlie told him

Grizzle went through the carwash and when the hot water started spraying him he looked around and wondered where it had come from and then started to smile because it was like someone was massaging his back.  Then the soap came and he tried to eat it, but then immediately spit it out.  That’s disgusting.

“You’re not supposed to eat it,” Charlie said from behind him laughing, “It’s to wash your body.”

“Oh!” Grizzle said.

Then came the blow dryer which felt like it was going to blow him away.  When he exited the carwash he asked Charlie how he looked.

“You look fluffy.” answered Charlie as he sniffed him.  “Hmmm.. I think you might need to go through it again, just to be sure we get all the garbage smell off of you.” “Ok, that was super fun!”  Grizzle said as ran around to the front to go through the carwash again.  This time he knew what he was doing and wasn’t as scared.

When he exited again he asked, “Now how do I look and smell?”

“Let me see that big smile of yours,” said Charlie

Grizzle gave him the biggest smile he could.

“That’s the one!”  He said as gave him a big hug “And you smell a lot better, come on let’s get you those Sour Patch Kids”.

Off they went to the grocery store and when they entered everyone stopped to stare at them.

“Don’t be scared, this is Grizzle and he is super nice.” Charlie shouted over all the voices.

“Really?”one of the little boys in a shopping cart asked

“Yes, he loves Sour Patch Kids so we are here to get him some.”  Charlie explained

They started to head to the candy isle and all the people kept an eye on him for a few seconds and then went back to their normal routine.  As they were walking Grizzle saw a mom having trouble reaching the macaroni and cheese on the top shelf so he stopped to help her.

“Thank You!” She told him, smiling up at him.

“You’re welcome!” he said, smiling back at her.

Once they reached the candy aisle he grabbed his stash of Sour Patch Kids and headed to the checkout.  After they paid, Charlie asked him, “Want to come to the park to play basketball?”

“Yes!”  He shouted with excitement “Let’s Go!”

So off they went to play in the park and that is how Grizzle met his new friend Charlie!

The End

Always Smile, Michelle
